Military K5 Blazer - We tend to look at military trucks on Craigslist and eBay just so we can dream about one more vehicle to add to our must-have list. The quintessential M35 is a staple, of course, because who doesn't love a Deuce and a Half? But we also dig all kinds of European and Eastern Bloc trucks. But as cool as it is, there's a special place in our hearts for the M1009 Chevrolet Blazers. These regular 1/2 ton models that everyone loves as the K5 are mostly reproduced for military use, depending on the year and options.

It's a 6.2L diesel, which in itself doesn't do much for us, but because of the year of manufacture, it's a diesel with no California emissions. So even though it's not legal, no one is going to check to see if we're redeeming a big block, LS, Cummings, or whatever makes our hearts beat faster. It is also equipped with a locked Dana 60 and 14 bolt that makes it bulletproof, and hmmwv (Hummer) tires are definitely for this thing.

But it's what the seller does with these things that makes them even bigger. The Off-Road Designs lift is only 4 inches, but it comes with a flip bracket that makes this truck look better than stock. The crossover steering is another big upgrade and the interior is equipped with good seats and a roll bar. Add a CB, stereo, PA and more and you have a comfortably cool off road rig that we're happy to park on the driveway.

It is a 6.2L diesel with a 4inch shackle flip Offroad design lift with tuff country springs, bilstein shock absorbers, crossover steering on a barrel with Dana 60 and a 14 bolt with full locker. I have hmmwv rims with 37" radial MT wheels. Interior completely redone with black upholstery, Corbeau Baja low back seats, classic industrial carpet, door panels, dash and crackers in the window! I have the original back seat with rear roll bar. Truck has CB, light bar, PA system, stereo with 4 6×9 pioneer speakers. Include some additional military truck parts that I'm in for it too.

2017 Winter Shop Tour Series: Let's Visit Tod's Attitude Rods in Oklahoma This 1979 Ford Crew Cab Short Bed is Root Beer Brown Greatness, and We Love ItWhen Christopher Hufstetler bought this 1984 M1009 K5 Blazer in 2009, it had axles bent, a bent frame, the rear box was shot, the transmission would not shift and the interior was destroyed. Additionally, the 6.2L diesel engine is not happy to start in cold weather. So why did Christopher buy the ratty M1009? "I bought this because I had a lot of parts to trade in from my old 1983 GMC truck that I've owned and driven for 12 years. Parts are cheap and easy to get around the country. I want a lighter and shorter wheelbase. Something clean. Something that can handle any terrain and get out of difficult situations without the help of others," said Christopher. "Most of the time that I ride and camp alone, so it should be heavy without feeling like I need a friend to follow me, to make sure nothing breaks or something bad happens along the way, and also a something I can drive every day without a bank to fill him up.

So began the build that would address all of the M1009's issues and transform the rig into a solid, reliable machine on wheels. His goals include using parts that are readily available at a salvage yard when he inevitably breaks parts on a constantly rolling machine. "Sure, things will break. But if they do, all I have to do is go to a junkyard and pick up the parts and we're good to go,” Christopher said.

We had the chance to see Christopher's M1009 feature on the trail during a recent all-out invasion in Moab, Utah, and we can say that he seems to have done a good job building this ex-military truck. What does he think of the current state of his installation? "Yes, it's not the best Blazer, but for me it's my life, pride and joy. My performance started paying off after three years, and I'm very happy with it now!

The 6.2L V-8 diesel remains mostly standard except for a dual 3-inch exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers. The amps are powered by a pair of twin alternators and a pair of Optima YellowTop batteries. The engine's power is sent through a TH400 transmission in an NP208 T-housing where it is split to conventional driveshafts.

Inside, the M1009 is equipped with a pair of leather front bucket seats, fire extinguishers and an LMC Truck steering wheel and headliner. In the cargo, Christopher is carrying a lot of salvage items and equipment. This 1985 Chevrolet CUCV M1009 K5 Blazer is one of the nicest military blazers we've ever seen. This is a very nice rig that has not been damaged and appears to be all original. It runs and drives great!! It still has the original military markings and the last owner told us this particular rig was used on an army base in Texas. It is rarely found in this condition and is extremely beautiful. The bodywork is clean and straight and appears to have all original camo paint which looks great! The underside is also very clean and we have not found any rust or rust repairs on this car. It still has all the original data labels, antenna mounts and bumpers. It also has a NATO spring plug on the front.

The interior is of course very basic, but in good condition. Everything appears to be original except for the dashboard which was previously replaced and the center console added. The dashboard has the same color as the saddle of the seats. The original seats are in excellent condition. It has a CB Mount on the interior, 2 M16 Mounts and a radio mount. There is also a factory blackout switch that turns off all lights except the red front one used to track where the vehicles are. The headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals work. All the gauges work as well as the wipers, horn and heating. The rear window was rebuilt with a new regulator and new glass and works great.

Mechanically this car is roadworthy. It starts quickly and runs and drives well and has a surprising amount of power. The engine is J Code Diesel 6.2L which means no emissions and more power. It seems to be all stock and it has a 24V and 12V system, which is a Dual Alternator system. The fuel filter has been updated to a spin-on filter with a water separator. The transmission is a Turbo 400 Automatic that shifts smoothly and is linked to an np200 transfer case. 4WD works as it should. It has Heavy Duty 10-bolt axles front and rear with 3.08 gears and a gov loc in the rear (Limited Slip). It's all on refurbished steel wheels with newer 32 inch BFG Mud Terrain tires. This is a cool rig and it's ready to roll!
