U.s. Army Beret Colors - Recently, an SSD reader commented that he doesn't understand why the Army and TACPs wear the same color. They don't. Cops wear dark blue (from CCT) and TACP wears black but the colors are close and in terms of mixing, you can really confuse the two. One of the funniest stories I heard from TACCS was from an Army soldier who told me how good it was that the Army let them wear helmets. TACPS wore berets before the Army gave them to everyone.
Today, many professions wear berets. It's really a skelter skelter of who has a beret and who hasn't over the years. Sometimes a beret is worn by AFSCs for combat purposes, while others are worn only by certain members. Take for example, anti-aircraft, where paratroopers only sport berets. On the other hand, you have the entire AF Security Force career wearing a beret. Being in the Special Tactic Force, you can find every color and Airmen wearing uniforms or uniforms.

Berets are often considered a symbol of the elite (although the US Army has decided to impose a black beret on all soldiers) and paratroopers. Looking at the list, the Air Force beret policy is not clear. For example, Air Force paratroopers do not wear berets in other jobs than the one below (although they have the same AF designation in most uniforms) and non-paratroopers in some AFSCs do.

This image is from the Air Force and is still not good. For example, Special Operations technicians have berets and don't wear the DUI of the ARSOF units they support. At least all the colors are true.

Hell, you're going to be greeted by a blue beret every time you enter the Air Force Base (SecFo HUA!), and if you held any military positions between 2001 and 2011, you got a black beret.

The Black Beret is the official uniform of the Air Force TACP. When you get into the air it's a leader, not a pararescue or fighter control.
The beret is commonly seen in all service branches at the time of writing. Security forces (the Air Force's version of the military police) wear a blue beret with every uniform, whether in special training.

Since November 28, 2001, all members of the United States Army have worn the black beret, unless the soldier is authorized to wear a different beret. There are three well-known examples in the US military. On June 13, 2011, the Patrol announced that it would replace the black woolen cap as the uniform headgear of the Army.
The maroon beret has been adopted as the official uniform by the Air Force as a symbol of their special abilities, the dark beret by the 75th Ranger Regiment, and the green beret by the Special Forces.
In the United States Army, the beret was worn unofficially by various special forces during and after World War II. In the summer of 1951, the 10th and 11th Ranger Companies wore the black beret during training at Camp Carson, Colorado, before being deployed to Japan. In the post-Vietnam era, morale in the US military plummeted. In response, from 1973 to 1979 HQDA allowed local officials to develop a single variation that would improve morale. As a result, many units adopted different berets, for example, the Armor units and Armor Cavalry units preferred the black beret. Similarly, many units adopted different berets to try to improve their declining behavior. In particular, the 1st Cavalry Division issued different colored berets to the TRICAP style. In this implementation, cavalry, air force units, air force units, infantry units and support forces of all units wore different breastplates, including black, light blue, Kelly green and red.

Headquarters, Department of the Army (HQDA) from 1973 to 1979 allowed local leaders to promote morale-boosting diversity. The Air Force decided to wear the Maroon Baro Parade as part of its distinction. This authorization was revoked in 1979 when the Army established a uniform policy and mandated black uniforms for Ranger and Airborne units. On November 28, 1980 the Air Force was authorized to continue wearing the maroon beret.
The olive trap was worn by the Alaskan 172nd Air Force from 1973 to 1979; 1st Battalion, 60th Infantry wearing light blue flash. On June 14, 2001, he was assigned to the 75th Ranger Division, and the United States Army Rangers were authorized to wear a special dark beret, replacing the black beret that had been worn by all troops. The tan beret is an homage to the original berets worn by Rogers' Rangers during the French and Indian War (1755–1763).

In the United States Army, only soldiers who have received the Special Forces Award, which indicates their ability to become Special Forces (SF), can wear the green beret. Special Forces wear it because of a shared heritage that goes back to the British commandos of World War II. Although it was not common for American units to wear unique helmets, it was common in the British Army, where many soldiers wore helmets, reflecting the history of the Pole. The Special Forces beret is officially designated as "Beret, Human, Fur, Gun Green, Military Shade 297".
In solidarity with British commanders in World War II, the United States Army Special Forces wear the green beret. The first Ranger unit, known as Darby's Rangers, was formed in Northern Ireland in the summer of 1942. After training at the Commando Training Depot at Augnecarry Castle in Scotland, the Rangers were entitled to wear the British Commando Green Beret. But it was not part of the regimental uniform at the time and was not approved by the US Army.
